Applications are sought from suitably qualified individuals who wish to be considered for the role of Ireland’s next Ombudsman and Information Commissioner.

The successful candidate will bring energy and vision to this high profile position, and will use the functions of the role in a constructive and positive manner to improve accountability and public service delivery.

The primary role of the Ombudsman is to investigate complaints against certain Public Service providers and to determine whether or not their actions have resulted in maladministration and adverse effect. The Ombudsman also has the power to carry out own initiative investigations without having received a specific complaint, which allows the Ombudsman to bring to public attention matters of significant public interest and drive improvements in the wider public sector.

As Information Commissioner the successful candidate will also review decisions of public bodies made under the Freedom of Information Act and make complex and legally binding decisions which are appealable only to the High Court.

The successful candidate will be appointed by the President of Ireland for a six year term, on the nomination of the Houses of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament), and may be reappointed for a second or subsequent term. The Ombudsman and Information Commissioner and will be independent in the performance of all of their functions and will be supported in their work by an experienced team.

While further information regarding the person specification is set out in the information booklet candidates will be required to have strong stakeholder management skills, will be expected to set strategic vision and leadership in directing investigations and making formal decisions, and demonstrate sound judgement on complex issues. Candidates must also have relevant professional experience to this role, have an understanding of public administration and a proven track record in either the public or private sector.
